How to Advertise Your Business Using Flyers
Flyers are an excellent, low-cost way for businesses to advertise their products and services. Whether you run a local pizzeria or boutique clothing shop, direct mail flyers offer a compact space to highlight what your business offers. They’re also perfect for introducing your business to new regions and demographics. In an age where consumers are bombarded by digital advertising, getting something in the mail is considered a nice change.
From captivating colour schemes to vibrant visuals, there are many ways to make your flyer mailer stand out from your competitors. If you’re interested in using this creative format for your next advertising campaign, here are some tips to help you get started.
1. Create a bold headline
Some people make the mistake of assuming flyers are just longer versions of business cards, but they’re actually a unique advertising platform. So avoid using your company name as a headline. Instead, come up with a separate, attention-grabbing header that highlights what you’re offering. This will take some time and effort to craft, so don’t rush the process.
Keep in mind that people want products and services that will solve a problem or make their lives easier. Instead of a headline that reads: “Lisa’s House Cleaning Service,” try, “Let us clean your house so that you can watch Netflix instead.”
2. Include the human touch
Consumers don’t enjoy interacting with faceless companies. Use your flyer as an opportunity to introduce the people behind your products and services. Do this is by including images of the team and the space in which they work. If there’s space, include a short blurb about how the company became what it is today. Did your father start the jewelry business when he arrived in Canada by boat 45 years ago? Tell that story. Be human, and people will want to build a relationship with your brand.
3. Use vibrant colours to draw attention
Aside from your message, the colour scheme is often the second-most important aspect of your direct mailing. Use vibrant colours to draw attention. Bold, rich hues are always more effective than paler tones. And don’t feel as though you need to restrict yourself to a monochromatic colour scheme. Feel free to experiment with three to four colours and see how well they complement each other.
4. Include a call-to-action
It’s not enough to simply tell consumers what your business offers; you have to convince them to make a purchase. A catchy headline and short list of feature benefits will have laid the groundwork for acquiring a sale. Now it’s time to convince the reader to take action.
A strong call-to-action should tell the consumer exactly what you want them to do. Do you want them to call you, visit your website or bring in a coupon for a 20% discount? Whatever it is, make your direct mailing’s call-to-action absolutely clear. You don’t want to lose a potential sale by frustrating the customer with a confusing purchasing process.
5. Mail your flyers to the right people
There’s no point in spending all this effort designing the perfect flyer if it won’t end up in the right hands. Instead of blindly mailing your advertisements to a large swath of people and hoping for the best, consider a more targeted approach instead. Identify your ideal demographic, and send your flyers to this group using addressed mail or bulk mail. According to Canada Post, 87% of Canadians will open mail personally addressed to them — even if it’s a company flyer.
