Different Envelope Formats

#10 envelopes are popular, as they work well for both promotional and informational direct mail. Their dimensions of 4-1/8″ x 9-1/2″ are ideal for enclosing roll-folded letters, three-panel brochures, flyers, coupons, reply cards, and more.

Invitation envelopes are often used to deliver special or congenial messages. Produced in a range of sizes such as 4-3/4″ x 6-1/2″, 5-1/2″ x 7-1/2″, or with similar “squarish” aspect ratios, invitation envelopes are a perfect fit for folded cards, postcards, gift cards and small letters. Invitation envelopes typically promote a special product, program or event.

Using a 5-7/8″ x 9″ envelope is a great way to stand out in the mailbox while staying within the standard direct mail size. 8.5″ x 11″ inserts can be half folded to fit perfectly within a 5-7/8″ x 9″ envelope. Other medium or medium-large inserts like 5.5″ x 8.5″ postcards also sit comfortably in a 5-7/8″ x 9″ envelope.

Oversize envelopes, such as 9″ x 12″ and 10″ x 13″ often have the most presence. They are easily noticed due to their large size, which also elicits an excitement to open the mail. Consider using oversize envelopes for direct mail magazines, booklets, catalogues, certificates, annual reports, letters, and other pieces with larger dimensions.

Another key element to think about is personalization. Will the insert(s) be personalized, showing the recipient’s address through a window envelope? Or will you use a non-window envelope, with the address inkjet directly onto the envelope? Although addressed non-window envelopes usually hold generic inserts, they can also be matched to personalized inserts during insertion.
