Letters are the most common forms of direct mail. Beyond their function to deliver tailored information, letters elicit a sense of closeness and care. Whether your letter is generic or personalized, you are sharing a physical, specific message that your recipient can hold and remember.
Commercial printing offers a wide variety of options for letters and letterheads, including coated and uncoated stocks, colour options, and a selection of sizes to suit your project . 8.5″ x 11″ is the standard letter size, which can be roll folded (tri folded) to fit a #10 envelope. A letter size piece can also be half folded to fit a 5 7/8″ x 9″ envelope, or stay flat to suit a 9″ x 12″ envelope.
8.5 x 14 is another common size for letters, considered legal size. A legal size piece can be half-and-half folded to fit a #10 envelope, and often has a response slip or coupon as its bottom section. This section can also be perforated for easy tear-off, or slit during folding so that it nests inside the main letter.
Printing colour letterhead in bulk is a cost efficient recommendation. Since colour laser printing and printing on demand is more costly, choosing to press print letterheads in bulk allows you to store them in advance for larger or longer direct mailing programs. Generic colour letterheads can later be personalized in black ink using a mailing list, and further customized with variable letter copy.
